Jo Bo-ah (조보윤)

Jo Bo-ah’s short-haired, kick-ass character in Military Prosecutor Doberman (2022) may have been an unexpected choice, but the actress who turns 33 today says she actually is pretty similar to the revenge-driven woman: They both have a strong will to achieve their goals.

Despite having already invested time and energy in studying aviation and tourism at Hanseo University, she dropped out in 2012 to pursue what she really wanted — to study performing arts at the famed Sungkyunkwan University, even if that meant being two years older than her fellow freshmen.

After debuting in the 2012 k-drama Shut Up Flower Boy Band, she took a few years to find success, but she kept at it, taking on challenging new roles and improving along the way. For her film debut in 2014, she portrayed a student who seduces her teacher in the suspense-thriller Innocent Thing. That same year, she took on the lead role in fantasy drama The Idle Mermaid, spending up to 14 difficult hours in the water at a time.

The hard work eventually paid off, and in 2016, she won her first acting award for her role in the MBC Drama Monster. In 2020, international fame came with her role opposite Lee Dong-wook in Tale of the Nine-Tailed. With her impressive performance in Military Prosecutor Doberman, one of the highest-rated k-dramas of that year, it’s evident Jo Bo-ah’s strong will and determination are paying off.
