Kim Se-jeong isn’t known as “God Sejong” for nothing. A bona fide “triple threat,” excelling wildly in singing, acting, and variety (and even in sports!), Kim is much more than the popular actress we know and love. She’s also an awarded musical theater star, show host, songwriter, survival show ace, philanthropist, and a much-sought-after endorser who shares the spotlight with international stars. And if that’s not enough, she’s even made time for her studies. Currently, the multi-talented idol and actress is a student of Practical Music at Hanyang Women’s University and starring as the lead in the new k-drama “Today’s Webtoon.”
IOI, Gugudan, and Variety Shows
Kim’s career as an idol has certainly had its ups and downs, but it has been fundamental in making her the popular star she is today. In 2016, she competed in the reality survival show Produce 101, where she won several first-place rankings throughout several episodes, thus earning her the nickname “God Sejeong.” She then became a member of the girl group I.O.I. which debuted later in 2016. However, the group disbanded a year later, and she went to debut in a new girl group called “Gugudan.” As a solo artist, Kim would then go on to win awards for her self-penned song “Flower Way”, even becoming one of the fastest soloists to win in a Korean music show. She would then later release singles for k-drama soundtracks, such as “The Legend of the Blue Sea” and “Crash Landing on You.”
Aside from being “God Sejeong,” Kim is also the “Variety Cheat Key” because of her long and multiple winning streaks in Korean variety shows (even scoring a “Rookie Variety” nom along the way). She joined 2017’s “Law of the Jungle in Sumatra,” where she showed off her impressive survival skills. In 2017, she was announced as a fixed cast member in “Busted!” the first Netflix Korean variety show, along with stellar variety veterans such as Yoo Jae-suk and Kim Jong-min. She’s also a permanent MC for “Get in Beauty” and the first co-host of “Baek Jong-won’s Alley Restaurant.”
School 2017 (2017)
Kim Se-jeong is Ra Eun-ho, a student who struggles with discrimination in her high school. Despite her troubles, she is a cheerful girl who dreams of becoming a webtoon artist. But one day, she’s tagged as the troublemaking “Student X,” throwing her life upside-down and putting all her dreams at risk.
I Wanna Hear Your Song (2019)
Kim plays timpanist Hong Yi-young who becomes an insomniac after witnessing a crime. Due to the trauma, she can no longer remember what has happened and decides to look for a job to regain some normalcy. She then meets pianist Jang Yoon (Yeon Woo-jin) who calls her every night to help her with her insomnia. Together, they try to get to the truth of the crime Hong has just witnessed.
The Uncanny Counter (2020)
The mission of hunting down evil spirits that plague Seoul has fallen to a rather unique group of individuals called "counters." Do Ha-na, played to action-star goodness by Kim Se-jeong, is their resident sensate who can read memories through touch. Despite her incredibly tragic backstory involving the loss of her own family, Ha-na has still opted to use her powers for good and finds the courage to be part of a ragtag team whom she eventually considers her new family. She's an active mentor to the new recruit So-mun (Jo Byeong-ku) and introduces him to the more fantastical side of the world where evil is wrought by demons and the weak are fair game for possession. She also cautions him as he learns to use his newfound powers, reminding So-mun of the dangerous consequences that belie counters who go against their missions.
“The Uncanny Counter” is currently OCN’s biggest hit, and is expected to have a second season coming soon.
A Business Proposal (2022)
As Shin Ha-ri, Kim plays up the frothy and fluffy kilig goodness in the hit Netflix rom-com “A Business Proposal.”
Shin takes the place of her friend who is supposed to go on a date, thinking if she’d turn him off, the man would back off forever. But instead, her antics enamor her date, the cynical CEO Kang Tae-moo, even more. But what they both don’t know is they currently work in the same place, with her being their food researcher and him being her CEO. Things get even more hilarious when the CEO’s grandfather presses him to get married, and it seems the only logical choice for a wife is this girl pretending to be someone else!
Today's Webtoon (2022)
Kim Se-jeong is On Ma-eum, once a member of the national judo team, who is now unable to continue as an athlete and must find a job to support herself. She ultimately lands a gig working in the editorial department of her favorite webtoon, and now has to use all her old athletic instincts to navigate her new world at work.
