Imagine starring in a drama that premieres to ratings of 1.7%, then ends with 23.7%, shattering cable TV records. It’s hard to wrap one’s head around, even for Yum Jung-ah, the woman who was at the center of the phenomenal 2018-19 hit SKY Castle.

The satirical drama about Korea’s obsession with education may have catapulted her to international fame, but the veteran actress had it a long time coming.

Yum Jung-ah debuted in 1991 in the variety show Entertainment Weekly and the drama Our Paradise. That same year, she was first runner up at Miss Korea, then went on to compete in Miss International in 1992, coming in as second runner up. Her early success proved to be auspicious, as she would go on to enjoy a 30-year career with over 50 dramas and films, and a respectable trophy haul to her name.

Her most notable films, for which she won multiple awards, include A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), The Big Swindle (2004), The Old Garden (2006), and Cart (2015). On the small screen, she is also known for 2008’s Working Mom and 2011’s Royal Family.

This working mom of two continues to lend her strong, commanding screen presence, as she starred in the crime action film Smugglers along with Kim Hye-soo and Jo In-sung. On the small screen, she most recently appeared in the Disney+ drama Snowdrop and the JTBC comedy Cleaning Up.
